In New York, several factors intersect and influence each other to create conditions that lead to vagrancy.

Even though New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world, poverty is the main cause of homelessness. For many residents, renting or buying a home becomes unaffordable. This leads to evictions and the inability to find affordable housing.

There is also a shortage of affordable social housing in NYC that could be used by low-income people or the vagrants.

Family members who are victims of domestic violence or divorce are often left without support and shelter. Thus, as a result of violence and family breakdown, people often find themselves living in the open air.

Lack of affordable healthcare also leads to vagrancy. Several studies show a strong link between healthcare costs and bankruptcy, which can quickly lead to vagabondage.

Addiction and mental illness can also lead to loss of housing. Research shows that addressing poverty, wages, affordable housing and health care costs will significantly reduce vagrancy.

How does homelessness affect NYC?

Vagrancy in NYC breaks new records every year. The vagabondage rate is primarily a reflection of economic and social problems in the city.

Homelessness in NYC can lead to increased crime or widespread substance abuse. These problems can lead to the fact that the problem of vagrancy affects a wider part of the population, not just those who are homeless themselves. In turn, this creates an additional burden on law enforcement agencies, which may affect their ability to respond to other incidents.

The combination of exposure to unfavorable climatic conditions, poor nutrition and the dangers associated with vagabondage can be detrimental to health.

Organizations that help the vagrants in New York

As the temperature drops, the homeless situation in NYC becomes even more challenging. Fortunately, there are organizations that work tirelessly to help the vagrants:

Housing Works. The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe and its thrift stores use the proceeds to support homeless people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Bowery Mission. This organization was founded in 1879. The staff aims to change the lives of vagrants who have fallen into the cycle of poverty. In addition to providing immediate needs for food, shelter and clothing, the Bowery Mission also offers recovery programs and a free medical clinic where homeless people can take care of their health.

BronxWorks. The BronxWorks homeless outreach team works on the streets 24/7 to help the vagrants obtain long-term housing, medical and mental health services and referrals to drug and alcohol treatment programs.

The Doe Fund. This particular organization helps formerly homeless and incarcerated adults become self-sufficient by helping them find permanent housing and acquire the skills necessary to re-enter the labor market. Volunteers with employment or professional experience can conduct mock interviews during two-hour sessions, after which vagrants can feel free to try to find different jobs.

The Partnership to End Homelessness is a center in NYC that helps families find housing. They offer extensive support to homeless men and women who are at risk of HIV infection.

Basic facts about vagrants in New York:

In recent years, vagrancy in NYC has reached its highest level since the Great Depression (a worldwide severe economic crisis) of the 1930s.

In June 2024, 132,293 people slept every night in NYC shelters. Thousands more (there is no reliable figure, as the annual HOPE assessment has significant flaws) slept rough in public places.

The main reason why people in New York become homeless is the lack of affordable housing.

Most homeless people are people with mental illness or other serious health problems.
