The early history

George Ehret was born in 1835 in Höchberg, Germany. He moved to the United States in the 1850s and settled in New York. He worked there as a bartender and liquor seller and then at the local Hupfel’s Brewery. George Ehret got the complete trust of the employer, the brewery owner, Mr. Hupfel, owing to his hard work and devotion. Ehret was fond of brewing, so he decided to start his own business. First of all, he informed his friend and employer Hupfel, who was a very kind and generous man, so he promised George to provide all the necessary help for the start-up.
An interesting fact is that Ehret chose a rather rural part of Manhattan for his brewery. It was located just opposite the bridge over the East River, which was also often called the Hell Gate. Thus, he decided to name his brewery the Hell Gate Brewery, which was founded in 1866.

The development and success of Ehret’s brewery
Ehret was aiming to produce the best light beer in the United States. He even drilled a borehole to extract pure artesian water in order to produce high-quality beer.
The Hell Gate Brewery quickly gained popularity among New Yorkers. After several years, the business was expanded to a larger enterprise with new equipment for brewing, bottling and storing beer.
Ehret’s brewery continued to grow every year. At the end of the 19th century, the brewery produced about 500,000 barrels of beer a year.

The New York Hell Gate Brewery became famous in the 19th century owing to its legendary beer called Extra Beer. It was a light, refreshing lager that quickly became a favorite among the city’s residents. Undoubtedly, Ehret’s beer was so successful and popular because he used clean water from the borehole.

Besides, Ehret’s brewery was also known for its innovative marketing strategies. Ehret was one of the first brewers who used advertising so extensively. At that time, his brewery had the brightest and most colorful advertising. Despite all the success, there were also dark times. Several fires happened at the brewery.
The development and success of the Hell Gate Brewery continued until the beginning of the 20th century. It became one of the largest in the United States and Ehret’s beer was sold not only in New York but also throughout the country. Unfortunately, the Prohibition era dealt a serious blow to Ehret’s brewery, as the production and sale of alcohol were prohibited at that time. This forced Ehret to close his brewery in 1920. And his heart stopped beating a few years later, in 1927.
After the repeal of Prohibition in the USA, George Ehret’s son took up the restoration of the Hell Gates Brewery. He completely reconstructed the factory and modernized production. Beer and ale were produced there until 1948.
In the 21st century, Ereth’s brewery is considered an important part of New York’s history. After all, it was one of the most successful and influential breweries in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was Ehret’s brewery that shaped the American beer culture widely known in the 21st century.
