University Founding
Fordham University was initially founded as St. John’s College in 1841 by Archbishop John Hughes, a native of Ireland. The university is the third-oldest higher education institution in New York City, and it is also the first Catholic university in the northeastern United States. In 1839, Hughes, who was 42 at the time, purchased the 106-acre “Rose Hill Manor” farm in the village of Fordham, New York, for $29,750. The archbishop’s intention was to found a seminary called St. Joseph’s on the model of Mount St. Mary’s University, from which he had graduated. It’s worth noting that Mount St. Mary’s University is located in Los Angeles. Initially, Fordham University was known as “Rose Hill”—a name given to the property in 1787 by its owner, Robert Watts, a wealthy New York merchant. In 1840, the St. Joseph’s Seminary opened at Rose Hill. On June 24, 1841, the seminary was merged with St. John’s College, which opened at Rose Hill. The Reverend John McCloskey (later Archbishop of New York and eventually the first American cardinal) was the school’s first president, and the faculty consisted of diocesan priests and lay instructors. In five years, the college’s presidency changed hands four times among diocesan priests, including the Reverend James Roosevelt Bayley, a distant cousin of Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1845, the seminary church of Our Lady of Mercy was built. That same year, Bishop Hughes persuaded several Jesuit priests from St. Mary’s College in Kentucky to take over the staff at St. John’s. The St. John’s curriculum consisted of a junior division (which later became “Fordham Prep”), requiring four years of study in Latin, Greek, grammar, literature, history, geography, mathematics, and religion. The curriculum also included a senior division (the college), which required a three-year study of the humanities, rhetoric, and philosophy. There was also a “commercial” course, similar to a modern business school, which was offered as an alternative to the classical curriculum and resulted in a certificate instead of a degree. On March 7, 1907, St. John’s College was officially renamed Fordham University. The name “Fordham” comes from the village of Fordham, where the “Rose Hill” campus is located. The village, in turn, got its name from its location near a shallow crossing of the Bronx River.

- Fordham College holds an annual “Encaenia” ceremony in early May. The name comes from the Greek word meaning “dedication” or “opening.” During this ceremony, the achievements of students and faculty are honored, awards and distinctions are presented, and speeches are delivered. The ceremony usually includes two speeches: one from the top-ranking graduate, which is more touching and sentimental (a farewell), and the second from an honorary Lord or Lady of the Manor, which is more humorous but also an important and touching part of the ceremony.
